The New Lanark Organic Wool Spinners

Our Organic Wool

New Lanark’s organic woollen yarn range is, as you’d expect made using 100% organic wool from the Falkland Isles, which is particularly soft and therefore a favourite for hand knitting. The range includes aran organic wool, double knitting organic wool, and chunky organic wool to standard UK weights which allows you to use it for all your favourite knitting patterns.

At the start of 2006 our specialist wool spinning production unit was the first in Scotland to achieve the Soil Association’s organic certification – Licence No: DK 17194, and New Lanark’s high quality organic yarn is now available for you to buy online.

At New Lanark Organic Wool Spinners the organic yarn is produced, spun and dyed organically with Soil Association certification at every stage in the process. The Soil Association symbol is a guarantee to the consumer that textiles are produced to the highest standards of animal welfare and environmental protection. These principles have been extended to cover the processing and production of textiles and the Soil Association has recently developed Standards for Organic Textile Production, which are ethically sound and realistically achievable. We work closely with the farmers that supply us with the raw organic wool, and all are registered with the Soil Association or Organic Farmers and Growers (OF&G). We oversee the production of organic yarn at every stage in the chain ensuring it complies with the Soil Association’s rigorous requirements.

By producing organically certified yarn at New Lanark Organic Wool Spinners we aim to keep our environmental impact to a minimum.

New Lanark mill is a small-scale producer of quality organic yarn, and we use traditional machinery, which does not rely on the environmentally damaging chemicals that are used to operate more modern equipment. Our wool is carded, spun and finished at New Lanark Organic Wool Spinners in accordance with the Soil Association’s strict guidelines, which prevent the use of acids, shrink-proofing, bleaches or moth-proofing chemicals.

When purchasing from New Lanark’s very affordable organic yarn range you can be sure that it has not cost the Earth.

At New Lanark Organic Wool Spinners we produce yarn for trade customers including retailers and clothing manufacturers, plus we are delighted that our wool is the choice of several design houses and designers who demand the highest quality yarn. As New Lanark operates as an independent organic wool spinning facility our production unit is able to offer a ‘fleece to finish’ service for organic farmers.

Our organic yarn is suitable for projects both large and small, and is ideal for hand knitting.
